Forgotten and Alone

Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat. – Mother Teresa
One of the more rewarding things I get to do for this site is to locate great content. When I find a site that is compelling, I try to post it for my readers. Motores Despidos (Naked Engines) is just one of these great finds. I found the site when I saw some photos of old race cars lying in a junkyard. I decided to post about it when I saw photos from an article called “Cars, companions of a lifetime.” You should check it out.
The site is run by someone with the blogger name Mechanic, and is written in Portuguese. Articles, as well as photo essays are the main content, but the topics are fascinating. Most impressive was an article entitled “Where are the racing cars after retirement.” It showed a series of picture of old race and rally cars rotting away in garages and open lots. Amazingly, it includes ultra rare and expensive models that should be worth tens of millions of dollars. It is one of the saddest photo sets I have ever seen.
An original Ferrari 250 GTO. Recently one sold at auction for $52 Million dollars.
A Lamborghini Diablo attracts goats in a field.
The body of a Ferrari 250 LM. One recently sold at auction for $14.3 Million dollars.
The world’s saddest Bugatti Type 35, living in squalor.
A slew of Lancia and Citroen rally cars, still dressed in livery.
A very forlorn Lancia Stratos in a barn.
Unbelievably, a group of Ferrari 250’s being crushed by a collapsed barn.
The rotting corpse of a Renault Alpine.
A Ferrari 250, an Avanti and some old F1 cars in a junkpile.
A beautiful Lancia Stratos rally car, now a doggie play house.
An abandoned Martini & Rossi Lancia 037 covered in dust.
A Ferrari 166MM Barchetta abandoned in a Tucson Arizona backyard.
A priceless Shelby Cobra GT in deplorable condition.
I am sure the owners are aware of how rare and valuable these cars are. It is possible they are abandoned, but equally possible they are just waiting for the day they will be restored. Cars like these are too valuable to let rot away.
